It's hard to know what level you're at with the bass knob, but with it situated at roughly halfway, you get some decent deep bass. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the speakers deliver less sub-bass than some big low end fans might want. Even at maximum bass levels, the bass output is relatively modest. For $150, we've tested 2.1 systems like the Harman Kardon SoundStick III that put the Nommo Chroma to shame in the bass depth department—but they have no LED wizardry.

When it comes to the lower notes it’s hard to say anything bad about the Razer Nommo Chroma.

Those are speakers, but from this angle you might think they are lights. The unusual Razer Nommo Chroma desktop speakers pack a surprising punch of audio and color. Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, sound excellent. The speakers accentuates the crisp, bright presence of the higher register brass, strings, and vocals nicely, and push the lower register instrumentation slightly forward in the mix. A hardwired USB cable connects to Macs or PCs and delivers digital audio, free of any digital-to-analog conversion. If you have a new Macbook, or any other system that's USB-C only, you'll need an adapter, but it'll work.

The one big let down that I have with the build of these speakers are those knobs. They’re not as smooth or as premium feeling as the control wheel that comes with the Nommo Pro—but they work fine, so I can’t complain too much. With optimized drivers built for full range sound and extreme clarity, the Razer Nommo takes you to a new dimension that blurs the line between fiction and reality. "These gaming-minded stereo speakers deliver rich, directionally accurate sound for hearing the competition coming, while also doubling as a pretty solid set of speakers for music and movies." Some of these Bavaria professionals work entirely on their own, while others work with subcontractors to get the job done.

Dolby Virtual Surround Sound technology creates a cinematic presence wherever you place your setup, transporting you right in the middle of the action. The Razer Nommo Chroma is lacking in connectivity options, with only a 3.5mm input for an audio cable, another for headphones, and a USB cable to plug into a computer. Each speaker has a ring of Razer’s Chroma RGB lighting underneath.

Unless you are really slouching and/or your desk height is abnormally high, these drivers aren't going to line up with your ears, which means you'll be missing out on the clarity they can offer. You can stack them on books or something else to bring them more in line with your ears, but that isn't ideal. Razer's Nommo Chroma speakers deliver solid audio in a cool design, but you're paying a premium for the LED light show they provide. Phenomenal gaming speakers need to do more than just be loud, they need depth and range to transport you to another universe.

I got refurbished as I would not pay full retail for this knowing the sound quality was not going to be great. It gets plenty loud enough, but the audio is very "boomy" all mid and bass but no nuance in the upper ranges. Speaking of movies, the gaming speakers work just as well for those, too. Just like with games, sound effects in movies were booming and aggressive, but never harsh.

There’s also the cable that connects the right speaker to the left speaker and the cable that runs from the right speaker to the USB port on the computer - yes, unfortunately it still requires both power from the wall and a USB connection to the PC. Powerful audio can completely immerse you in your experience, bringing games, movies and music to life. With optimized drivers built for full-range sound and extreme clarity, the Razer Nommo takes you to another dimension that blurs the line between fiction and reality. On the base of the main speaker are two knobs for adjusting volume and bass, and as you turn them up or down the color on the bottom of the speaker acts as a visual aid. So as you raise the volume, the light under the main speaker becomes green and moves around the bass to show you raising and lowering the volume. The same happens when you turn the bass knob, except it’s the other speaker that does it, and the color is blue.

Even when lit and rotating through every shade in the color spectrum, they're surprisingly subdued. The Razer Nommo start at $100 (AU$60, £35), but the Nommo Chroma speakers reviewed here here cost $150 (AU$189, £109) and add a band of lights in the base of each speaker that can be tuned to 16.8 million colors. Razer also makes the $500 (£500) Nommo Pro speakers, which add a separate tweeter on top of each driver and a standalone downward-firing subwoofer.

To be sure, they sounded supremely full and balanced playing every genre I threw on it, even at max volume. I wouldn't hesitate to use the speakers for a small party , but if it's primarily a music speaker you seek, better keep looking. Audio is luxuriously rich and full, with thunderous bass that packs a pronounced punch. Due to the directional audio, loud effects felt intensely immersive. No one would call the cops on you for blasting at maximum volume, however they are surprisingly powerful, mimicking the larger-than-life effect of a movie theater, except on a much, much smaller scale.

Even the Logitech MX Sound 2.0 managed to stuff in Bluetooth at a much lower price point. On the right speaker sits a bass control knob, allowing you to fine-tune the output perfectly—from ground-shaking bass to a low hum for late night sessions. Thanks to automatic gain control, you can also ensure the bass scales distortion-free. Shop your favorite products and we’ll find the best deal with a single click.
